Lisa Volpe, J.D., formerly a Deputy Chief Attorney with the Special Litigation and Appeals Unit of the Mental Hygiene Legal Service (MHLS), Second Judicial Department, handled appeals and trial support motion practice in all areas of the mental hygiene law, as well as federal litigation addressing systemic violations of the civil rights of individuals with mental disabilities. A significant focus of her appellate and trial practice was questions relating to civil commitment, guardianship, the use of psychiatric advance directives, end-of-life decision-making for individuals with mental disabilities, and the proper application of the Surrogate’s Court Procedure Act, Article 17A and the Family Health Care Decisions Act as those statutes pertain to decisions for persons with mental disabilities. Now retired, Lisa continues to work with the New York State Bar Association's Elder Law & Special Needs Section to advocate for persons with mental disabilities.
