This session is designed to acquaint NARPA participants with some human rights priorities and current struggles of the developmental disability advocacy community, and to provide a philosophical framework within which these issues are often considered by disability activists. Groups to be highlighted include:

• Autism National Committee (AUTCOM), with its stance against aversive therapies, restraint and institutionalization for people with autism;
• CIBRA, an organization of family members of developmentally disabled people damaged through coercive behavioral therapies; and
• TASH, a large professional organization promoting alternatives to aversive approaches, segregation and guardianship.

The session will encourage discussion with participants concerning potential areas of coalition building.
