Ron Schraiber, Director of Consumer Affairs, Los Angeles Co. Dept. of Mental Health
The presenter, a long-time consumer/survivor activist, will discuss and draw practical lessons from three separate organizing actions in California to protest (1) job discrimination in a rural mental health system and related lack of client empowerment with ensuing boycott (2) the awarding of a suburban drop-in center contract to an organization not sensitive to consumer/survivor concerns, and (3) a national "anti-stigma" campaign by a mainline mental health organization. An interactive discussion with the audience will be a central part of the workshop, including the importance of coalition building.
