Strategies and Visions for Youth Education

Leah Harris, Katherine Hodges, and Jenny Rogue

In 2003, the presenters gave workshops providing a critical view of the mental health system to large, enthusiastic audiences at two major youth activist conferences. They discovered that there is an incredible demand for information in these communities, and also discovered that a high percentage of the political and community activists they met had experienced psychiatric oppression as youth. The presenters will talk about their breakthrough in reaching this new audience, and the lessons they learned in educating youth/activist communities; relate the concerns of the young people they spoke to; and discuss initiatives their new network hopes to pursue.
