Making Recovery Real Through the New Freedom Commission On Mental Health
The recently released Report by the White House Commission on Mental Health "envision[s] a future when everyone [diagnosed] with mental illness will recover..." The report emphasizes the theme of recovery and offers advocates an excellent opportunity to move the system to one based on recovery. Themes such as "nothing about us without us," and employing consumer/survivors as providers and trainers are found in the commission's recommendations. These proposals have been made before; the difference is that they are being made in a White House Report, which gives these ideas credibility. However, they still can only become a reality when advocates promote their implementation at state and local levels.
