Hearing Voices Groups: An Innovative Alternative to Understanding and Coping with "Hallucinations"Gail Hornstein, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Mt. Holyoke College Thousands of people in the UK, Holland, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia, Japan and Australia have joined Hearing Voices (HV) groups to make sense of their "auditory hallucinations" and to learn strategies to cope with the voices that go beyond the neuroleptic medications psychiatrists routinely prescribe. Although there are more than 130 such groups in the UK alone, and mental health practitioners there increasingly seek training in the HV approach, little is heard about this work in the USA. This workshop will outline key features of the approach, and make participants aware of the main networks and information sources. |
